Discussion

Polish literature business quickly subordinated itself to the new capitalist principles of post-socialist Poland, while a great diversity of themes and poetic innovations became apparent in literary texts. This changed at the end of the 1990s, when literary production also began to mirror and be subordinated to the market. This complex picture of changes in literature (business) reflects new social, economic and political developments, while drawing an image of the Polish cultural transformation.

The close coupling of literary narratives, social problems, changes in social groups, both discussed and expressed by literature, and shifts in the evaluation of what important literature is, creates a special significance for our assessment of the present, and so – of the transformation. I view economics and politics not as separate from but, instead, as an integral part of culturally-produced social relations represented in and by literature. The key value of my research is the investigation of literature to uncover the processes of the formation of (new) social structures in post-socialist transformation. In my paper I will show this using the example of three factors that are directly related to literature or its business: (1) the changes in the publishing industry, (2) in the prize and fellowship landscape and (3) the newly published texts that were considered valuable by the public debate.
