The research of exhibiting contemporary history in museums is often concentrated on its political level. The exhibitions are conceptualized as containers for the historical narratives in this framework and the focus is especially on the judgements presented in the narratives of central museums and memorials. This paper aims to show museums in broader ecology of their institutional structure including regional museums, their own history and their interaction with visitors. Based on the research of these three aspects, this paper attempts at a more complex insight into the memory practices in Czech museums related to the era of state socialism. The key question is what happens with cultural memory in museums in relation to state socialism? The answers will be presented on several examples from different museums and memorials from local to state-wide level and conceptualized through the lens of media memory studies and museum studies.
