Discussion

The level of education as element of a person's social capital is a significant resource in the context of social upward mobility in overcoming social inequality. Parents set their children’s individual educational trajectories in the family during the childhood. Parents, when deciding on the level of educational activity of their children, would increase not only their starting resources and opportunities in the future in the labor market, but also lay the ideological foundations of their attitude to education as a life-long process. The paper shows, to what extent parents are ready to invest in their children’s education, which kinds of education, additional education they prefer for their children. The paper analyses parents’ motivation in their choice of educational strategies in different types of families with different social and economic status (income, level of parents’ education etc.) in small Russian town. The paper explores educational strategies of low-income families as a way out of poverty for their children. The comparison of research results of 10 years gives opportunity to see changes if parents’ attitude towards children education.
