Discussion

Already in the 1990s, a trend emerged that Russian queer dramatic works would be sometimes staged abroad before coming onto domestic stages (if ever). In this talk, I examine select theater productions of Russian queer plays written in the 1980s-2010s and staged in the UK, USA, and Germany, to explore global dimensions of Russian queer drama and theater. The paper focuses on the questions of why and how these productions came into being outside Russia, for whom they were destined, and how the original text was interpreted for local audiences outside Russia. I seek to draw connections between these extended spatialities of queer Russian drama and Russian queer diasporic communities in global centers like Berlin, New York, or London, as well as non-diasporic audiences in these and other locations and to do so, analyze local mediascapes of Russia, against the background of which these interpretations emerged.
