What happened to liberal dreamers when the history returned? Transformation of academia in Russia, Hungary and Turkey: cases of liberal backsliding (1989-2019)
The paradoxical political behaviour that is singled out in the research project is the transformation of public actors who identified themselves as liberals in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union into subsequent salient anti-liberal advocates. Particularly, the current paper examines liberal backsliding in the field of academia in Russia, Hungary and Turkey in 1989-2019. The project relies on the concept of fields in political sociology and neo-institutionalist corpus of literature, following the changing discourse of field challengers as they become incumbents.
