One of the prominence military thinkers and one of the key influential military scholars of Russia, Army General (ret.) Makhmud Gareev considered modern military problems in conjunction with geopolitical conditions in the world. Gareev who also was a head of the Academy of Military Science - the organization which plays a main platform role for high-level discussions on military affairs in Russia, emphasized necessity to consider military problems amidst international political situation almost in all of his works. Gareev’s works are also important for understanding of contemporary Russia’s military thought because of in his works almost all of Russians military and non-military approaches in military conflicts are reflected. Moreover, Gareev, who was in key military positions between 1950s and until the collapse of the USSR, was considered as a respectful and reliable military theorist by Russian political and military elites. This paper analysis General Gareev’s works and tries to explain how the development of contemporary Russia’s military thought and discourses on it are reflected in his writings.
