ANATOLII POGORIELOV1; 1 BABYN YAR HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CENTER, Ukraine
Discussion
Since the beginning of the occupation of Ukraine, the city of Mykolaiv became the center of Mykolaiv general district and administratively was a part of the Reichskommissariat of Ukraine. With coming of the German occupation troops and establishment of a “new order” in the region, mass terror by representatives of the security police, SD, and other punitive structures was immediately deployed.“Effectiveness” of the activities of various punitive organs led to almost total extermination of the Jewish and Roma population in the first months of occupation. However, the systematic pursuit and destruction of all “politically harmful elements” continued throughout the occupation period. An important place in the system of terror against the civilian population of Mykolaiv general district was played by Vodokachka concentration camp of the security police and SD. This camp became the site of trauma and death for a large number of people. On the basis of recently declassified materials of SBU concerning employees of Mykolaiv security police and SD it’s possible to trace the process of creation of this camp, determine its functional purpose, find out information about the staff, highlight the facts of the shootings and starvation of prisoners, and their deportation in 1943-1944 to concentration camps in Germany. The camp existed from 1942 to 1944. It contained about 600 detainees involved in the underground partis. movement, Sov. activists, Jews, etc.
