Profile of Prof Michelangelo Canzoneri

Michelangelo Canzoneri is a strategic leader in business transformation with 15+ years of healthcare industry experience and a proven digital leader who is passionate about enhancing and elevating the importance of the patient experience across the digital continuum of the drug development life cycle. He has an extensive track record in optimizing and transforming the operating model of healthcare and pharmaceutical businesses, while conceptualizing and creating new business models.
Michelangelo’s focus is on converging science, technology, business processes and regulatory requirements enabled by a holistic digital transformation strategy, with the aim of paving the way toward preventive, precision, and personalized medicine.
He created the holistic vision, strategy, technology, and program roadmap for realizing the Manufacturing/Lab of the future, developed and integrated an enterprise knowledge management platform for technology innovation, defined and implemented a holistic and healthcare industry specific Digital Academy for upskilling all internal employees for all organizational levels and business roles with Data and Analytics capabilities and established a Cyber Security organization focusing on Operations Technologies, Business Managed Applications and Digital Products.
As an expert in chemical engineering and bioprocess optimization, Michelangelo has fundamental hands-on experience with developing and industrializing scalable manufacturing processes from pre-clinic to clinical trials Phase III.
Michelangelo has successfully connected data silos and implemented business processes across R&D and manufacturing, contributing towards the saving of billions of euros through implementation of new technologies, and efficiency improvements.

Michelangelo obtained his PhD in Bioprocess Engineering at the University of Bielefeld, Germany and before joining Merck, he held positions of increasing responsibility at Kourion Therapeutics AG in quality control, and Sanofi, where he worked in R&D CMC, Commercial Manufacturing, Technology and Innovation, and Digital Transformation.

Michelangelo is a strong supporter of education and training students, bridging academics and industry. He is a Professor at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, Germany and a Guest Lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
Michelangelo holds several patents, including a micro bioreactor developed together with MIT.

Michelangelo is fluent in German, Italian and English.
