The medicines industry is going through a period of change. While small molecule therapeutics still make up 90% of approved medicines, patient expectations are driving the industry towards targeted, precision treatments, which require a shift towards stratified, complex medicines, with more challenging discovery and development needs. Building on rapidly improving biological understanding of disease, new therapeutic modalities are being developed to target previously undruggable targets.
This generation of therapeutics and vaccines often require sophisticated delivery technologies to be effective medicines, for example to provide tissue targeting or effective intracellular delivery. Such complex medicines include a variety of advanced drug chemistries and therapeutic targeting vehicles, comprising complex APIs (e.g., antibody drug conjugates, oligonucleotide conjugates), advanced delivery mechanisms (e.g. targeted therapies) and complex dosage formulations (e.g., nanomedicines).
To embark on new complex medicines discovery programmes, scientists require distinct drug discovery expertise, specialist technical skills, access to equipment and infrastructure and drug delivery know-how, as well as regulatory and commercialisation support.
This meeting will focus on recent trends and practice, encapsulating insight from experts in these areas.
