It is increasingly being recognised that robotics and automation supports activities in the laboratory. This short presentation will highlight some of the economic arguments in favour of robotics and automation including benefits to the users and impact on productivity. Europe has traditionally been a leader in this area. Initiatives at the EU and national level are now underway that supports some aspects. However activities in other countries are in many cases poised to move ahead
