Hydraulically Amplified Self-Healing Electrostatic Actuators: working principles and potential applications in medical devices.

Abstract

Traditional rigid robots display impressive mechanical performance useful for improving and streamlining manual tasks. Taken outside of a planned environment, however, robots are confronted with the complex challenge of interacting with unpredictable and often delicate surroundings. Soft actuation is a subfield of robotics aiming to address this challenge, by developing an alternative to traditional motors for powering robots that are compliant and inherently gentle to their surroundings. Our group focuses on developing a specific category of electrically-driven soft actuator device called Hydraulically Amplified Self-healing Electrostatic, or “HASEL,” actuators. HASELs display muscle-like mechanical performance that is gentle yet strong, fast, and customizable. We are inspired to explore their usability not only in robots, but also in devices interfacing with people. In this talk I will introduce the working principles of HASELs and showcase projects potentially relevant to fields in medicine, such as active tremor suppression devices, self-sensing grippers, and haptic displays.
